Do You Matter?
|
In a world that values "high stakes" academic achievement, many feel the educational system doesn't place the same value on health and physical education. For the first time in decades, there is opportunity to make a real impact.
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) passed by Congress is step one. Through the tireless work of SHAPE America and Indiana AHPERD advocates, health and physical education is now defined as part of a well-rounded education. What does that mean? It means we matter in the eyes of policymakers. It means we have a seat at the table. We are part of the discussion. It also means we must have something important to offer.
In Indiana, health and physical education will have access to federal funding on an equal basis with other important educational initiatives like mathematics, language arts, college and career readiness and all other aspects of a well-rounded education.
That's big news! While we have made great strides, so much more work remains. Federal and state policy is slowly opening new opportunities. However, the real work will be done within school districts where local decisions decide what is in the best interest of the community.
Our profession depends on local champions like you!
Become an ESSA expert in 77 seconds
Each school district and each school needs advocates for health and physical education. If not you, who? Not just for the profession but for the health, well-being, and happiness of all students.
Indeed, advocacy is a part of everyone's job description. Don't worry, you are not alone. More programs, more resources, more information, and more professional development are on the way.
In fact, the state conference is full of great opportunities to learn how to speak up for health and physical education. Our two keynotes will talk about the importance of physical literacy and moral courage. The SHAPE America president will talk about '50 Million Strong' and why that matters. Countless break out sessions will demonstrate innovative techniques, how to improve outcomes, assessment strategies, and other professional development opportunities. There has never been a better time to "GET IN."
