Last summer, the Indiana DOE asked for comment on a draft state ESSA plan. We applauded the strong language supportive of health and wellness efforts in schools. The language shows a high-level of understanding that physical activity, nutrition, social/emotional health, and mental health positively impact a student's ability to learn and be successful.
ESSA guidelines are designed to support any evidence-based interventions that address a school's assessments under the definition of a "well-rounded education." That includes health and physical education. Therefore, we asked Indiana to expand the definition of fundable projects under Title IV Part A to include all subjects that fall under the definition of a "well-rounded education."
We spoke, they listened. Title IVa funds are now available to support quality health and physical education.
Title IVa applications due on Oct 16, 2017
Now is the time for you to work with colleagues concerned with the health and well-being of students in your school district or charter school. We encourage you to identify new health and physical education opportunities.
