The Future of Health and Physical Education in Indiana

Did you know there are over a million K-12 students in Indiana? That equates to more than 2,200 school buildings on Hoosier soil. Most have invested in playgrounds, gymnasiums, tracks, courts, fields, pools, fieldhouses, and other places for active children to become better learners.

We know every child requires sixty minutes or more of daily physical activity. Unfortunately, less than one in five Indiana children reach that goal. How can it be that Indiana is infrastructure rich and wellness poor? The answer is more complicated than constructing facilities and counting minutes.

The path to student wellness (and improved academic achievement) involves earnest conversations about physical literacy, health equity, and school culture/climate. Who will lead those conversations? Thousands of licensed health and physical educators like you. Individually, and as a member of this professional association, your voice is needed. Your students, your schools, and your community deserve better.

If you don't speak up, who will? Silence on this issue makes a loud statement. So we must speak up. The stakes are too high to leave the conversation to someone else. We teach health advocacy (standard #8); we must practice health advocacy too.

Together we can RESHAPE the Conversation. Allow INSHAPE to make an investment in the future of your profession. Attend the upcoming INSHAPE Leadership Conference to improve your craft as educator and advocate. There is no cost to attend - INSHAPE covers the cost of materials, meals, and lodging.*

*Deposit required; 100% refunded after the conference. Questions? Contact Gary Lemke.

What happens at the Leadership Conference? The agenda includes team building exercises so you can get to know other Indiana teachers. There will be dedicated time to share concerns and opportunities, collaborate on new ideas for the state conference, improve your advocacy skills, and hear from guest speakers.
